Dr. med. Harald Burgard from the European Academy for Gold Implants presents a gentle alternative to spine surgery and joint replacement on the health channel QS24: the implantation of fine gold close to the joint. Dr. Burgard learned the procedure from me – which makes me all the more pleased that he is presenting it to a broader audience.

What the conversation is about

The programme is entitled »Goldimplantate: Was Veterinäre wissen, aber Ärzte nicht« and lasts a good 26 minutes. At the heart of the programme is the question of why a procedure that has been established in veterinary medicine for decades is still relatively unknown in human medicine – and what that means for people with chronic joint and back pain.

Why looking into veterinary medicine is worthwhile

Gold implants have been used for many years in dogs with osteoarthritis. Because animals have no expectations of a treatment, the observed change in their mobility is considered by many to be particularly significant. It is not uncommon for dog owners to learn about the method through their pet – as one female patient also describes in our Field report on gold implantation in the knee.

Spine and joints without surgery

The approach differs fundamentally from a joint replacement: nothing is removed and nothing is replaced. Instead, tiny fine gold pins are inserted into the connective tissue close to the joint, where they release gold ions and can dampen inflammatory processes. The article explains why gold is suitable for this Why gold is so valuable in pain therapy; we describe the course of the treatment on the page Treatment & Procedure.

The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis and under local anaesthetic; a general anaesthetic is not required. You can find answers to the questions that our patients ask us most frequently – from costs to the MRI – in the frequently asked questions.
